Who is Appraising your jewelry? Please be aware that the State of New Hampshire does NOT require a person performing jewelry appraisals to have any gemological training or to be licensed in any way. There are NO requirements for education in the jewelry industry or training in gemology for jewelry appraisers. Basically anyone can call themselves a jewelry appraiser and write jewelry appraisals. This may sound unbelievable but it is a fact, 90% of all jewelry appraisals have details that are either incomplete, inaccurate or in some cases false. At Bellman Jewelers only GIA Graduate Gemologists' will be appraising your jewelry.
Due to the lack of regulation it becomes the jewelry owner's responsibility to find a qualified jewelry appraiser to determine not only the value of your jewelry but have the ability to identify and grade the quality of your gemstones and jewelry. If you should have to make a jewelry claim and the information in your appraisal is vague or inaccurate, then the insurance company will not have the ability to adjust your claim properly and you will most likely not receive full compensation for your claim.
What qualifications should you look for in a jewelry appraiser?
First and foremost that the appraisers attended the Gemological Institute of America, the world's most well known school of gemology. Then it's important that the appraiser has received the degree of Graduate Gemologist (G.G.). This means that they are proficient in not only diamond grading but colored stone grading and most importantly gem identification.
Be sure that the person indentifying the quality of your jewelry and gemstones has the proper knowledge and training to accurately determine the authenticity and actual value of your fine jewelry. With three Graduate Gemologists' on staff at Bellman's you are assured that your jewelry will be appraisal accurately by professional jewelry appraisers.
Many appraisers charge per item regardless of whether they spend 5 minutes working on an item of jewelry or 50 minutes. As a result, you could end up paying two or three times more than an appraisal based solely on the amount of time actually spent doing the work. Therefore at Bellman's we work on a flat rate of $75.00 per hour for items left for appraisal and in most cases we can appraise 2 or 3 items in an hour. If you choose to wait while your appraisal is being done we would be happy to accomodate you, the charge is $125.00 per hour and requires an appointment.
In addition, all Bellman's appraisals are stored on our specially designed appraisal database; this allows us to update your appraisals without you ever needing to bring your jewelry back to the store. So as the price of gems, gold and platinum increase we recommend updating your appraisals every five years.
Turn Around Time:
The majority of our appraisals are completed within 7 business days. More complex appraisals could require a few additional day.
Appraisal updates are done at a nominal fee to cover time and printing materials. If your appraisals are ever lost we can reprint them at anytime.
