Clarity in a diamond refers to the number of internal and external inclusions located on or within the diamond. Diamonds range from "flawless", which means having no inclusions using a 10 power microscope to "imperfect", having inclusions that can be easily seen with the unaided eye. The charts below describe the various clarity ratings showing the location and type of inclusions you would expect to see for each of the clarity grades.

Bellman's CoolSchoolIn each diamond plot, a technique of using red to show inclusions that are located within the diamond and green to show inclusions or blemishes that break the surface of a diamond is used. If you were planning to purchase a certified diamond, a plot similar to this would be shown on the certificate. The plots below are samples and because each diamond is unique the location and combination of inclusions in each diamond will vary.
