Many people do not feel confident in determining the clarity grade of a diamond and for good reason. Without the proper instruments and education on what to look for, consumers can easily misread a diamond’s clarity. However, you can accurately identify a diamond’s clarity rating by following these simple steps.

1. Look only at loose, un-mounted diamonds. If a diamond is already mounted in a setting, it is impossible to determine if there are inclusions, chips, naturals, etc. being hidden beneath the prongs.

2. Always use a microscope, not a hand-held loupe, when viewing a diamond. Most consumers are familiar with the loupe. This instrument is used by jewelers all over the world to grade diamonds. What people don’t realize is that it takes several months of experience using a loupe before you can accurately identify a stone’s clarity. Therefore, a lighted microscope set to 10 power magnification is recommended and regardless of your clarity grading skills,
you will see every inclusion in the diamond.
