The
Four C's
The 4C’s are Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color, and are the
very basic characteristics that determine the quality and value
of a diamond. There are 8 basic Cuts (or shapes): Round Brilliant,
Oval, Marquise, Heart, Pear, Radiant, Emerald, and Princess.
Carat (Diamond Weight)
Like many other commodities, diamonds are sold by their weight.
Carats are part of the metric system and a one carat diamond
is equivalent to 1/5 of a gram (or 100 points). Therefore,
a five carat diamond would weigh exactly one gram. |
Magic Numbers
|
| Small changes in the weight of
a diamond can significantly impact its value. For example,
a diamond weighing exactly one carat with a color grade of
F and a clarity grade of VS1 could cost approximately $8,000.
The same diamond weighing 0.98 carats would cost $6,700. That’s
a decrease in value of $1,300 for a difference of just 2/100th’s
of a carat. That’s why we call weights just over 1.00,
1.50, 2.00 etc. magic numbers. |
