Pay particularly close attention to this
next section!
It is considered one of the most important areas of grading and will help ensure the diamond you purchase will be of the highest quality for the best price.

What is a Natural?
When a diamond cutter cuts a rough diamond into a finished stone, he or she sometimes leaves a small section of the rough diamond unpolished, or "natural". This practice allows the cutter to retain as much of the diamond's original weight as possible.

What does a Natural look like?
When viewed under a 10 power microscope, a natural looks like a chip in the diamond. Naturals can be very small and barely visible or quite large and easily seen by the naked eye.

Naturals are usually located near the girdle.
Typically, naturals come in pairs and are positioned directly opposite each other. Most naturals are invisible when viewed from the top. Therefore, it is very important that you view the un-mounted diamond with a 10 power microscope, not only from the top, but from the sides as well. Occasionally, a natural is located above the girdle making it easy to detect under a microscope.
